This first-year private garden sits on 40 acres. The property is surrounded by expansive fields and bordered by mature deciduous and evergreen trees. The clients have gardened for over 50 years but grappled with how to achieve a cohesive feel for the property.

Our goal was to design the garden they aspired to create. To do so, we used the client's love for native plantings as our starting point. In particular, we spent time observing the property's uncultivated edges, where wildflowers mixed with prairie grass. This indiscriminate mingling informed our initial design, allowing us to loosely play with plant pairings.

We also wanted the garden to require little input, per client request, so we leaned heavily on tough, drought-defying plants such as bluestem and yarrow. Color was also a consideration, as the client asked us to include shades of purple with accents of whites and yellows.

As for structure, we carved a path through the middle of the garden to provide movement and enjoyment from every turn. The path winds through a sun-filled swath of agastache and salvia and ends in a shade planting anchored by carex and deschampsia. The overall softness of this space is most noticeable on windy days as the prairie breeze blows through.

The project was a gift that we were honored to create.
