Our client was looking for a calm space in her suburban backyard. In particular, the client desired privacy from the nearby street and the neighbors, all the while leaving room for the client's dog to run.

Our solution was to create a tiny oasis. We relied on a variety of warm- and cool-season grasses among which we scattered astrantia. The astrania sits beside a brief flagstone path that quietly splits the garden, which is punctuated with locally sourced granite.

As for privacy, we used viburnums at the back and sides of the garden to create a hedge for the client’s seating area. We complimented the hedge with a container planting that seamlessly flows out and over into the garden, where it mingles with the feather-reed grass.

Since the install, the client has commented several times about the tranquility of her space. On some days wind threads the grasses. Other days songbirds sit in the viburnum and pluck berries. It was a pleasure to help create these calm moments.
